Dar Es Salaam - A collision between two buses in northern Tanzania killed 24 people and left another 51 injured, police said on Wednesday.

"The two buses collided head on at Kwangavu areas yesterday (Tuesday) evening. Twenty-four people died on the spot," Tanga Region Police spokesman Simon Mgawe told AFP.

"Police are still investigating the cause of the accident and those injured were rushed to Bombo Hospital in Tanga for treatment," he said.
He added that the accident involved a passenger bus travelling from Arusha to Dar es Salaam and a mini-bus that was going to Hedaru in Kilimanjaro region.

Road accidents in the east African country are rampant and mostly caused by reckless driving, poorly maintained vehicles and bad roads.
