Chadema to change women nomination process

CHAMA cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA) has said that the party will in the future pick women candidates for parliamentary seats through constituencies.

The party's Deputy Secretary General, Zitto Kabwe, said in Dar es Salaam on Sunday that the current system of nominating candidates through the women council has caused a lot of setbacks.

“The current system has given us a lot of inconveniences and we have decided to abandon it," he said.

This follows an array of complaints by the losers in the race who said that the current system did not give them much space to win.

The claims were backed by the election supervisor, Dr Kitila Mkumbo, who faulted the current system as ‘undemocratic and violated the party's principles of free democracy.

Mr Zitto acknowledged the fact that the party attracted a record number of aspirants, attributing the trend to increased awareness by women of their role in politics.

He said that under the proposed new system, priority will be given to constituencies which faired well and regions which produced more votes in the general election. He said that the party's central committee will meet next month to deliberate on the issue.

CCM retains Mramba, Chenge

THE CCM National Executive Committee (NEC) has retained Mr Basil Mramba and Mr Andrew Chenge among the party's candidates for parliamentary seats despite having criminal cases pending in courts.

Mr Mramba was charged with misuse of office and Mr Chenge is accused of causing deaths of two women for reckless driving. Sources inside NEC told the 'Daily News' that the decision was logical because the two prominent CCM members were still suspects until proved otherwise.

"The position of our constitution is that everyone is presumed innocent unless proved otherwise and therefore, Mr Mramba and Mr Chenge have not yet lost qualifications to run for parliamentary seats," the source said.

Mr Mramba is the incumbent Member of Parliament for Rombo in Kilimanjaro Region while Mr Chenge is the MP for Bariadi West in Shinyanga Region.
