hours are Monday to Friday from 8.30 am to 3 pm and Saturdays from
8.30 to 11.30 am. The best rates offered by the banks
are to be found at the National Bureau de Change on Samora Ave
diagonally opposite Extelecoms House.
This bank actually offers better rates than most of the foreign exchange
bureaus. In addition to the banks, there are many foreign
exchange (forex) bureaus scattered around the centre of
Dar. They are
generally open between 8 am and 5 pm from Monday to Saturday
and some are open on Sunday mornings.
The Bank of Tanzania is the central bank of the United Republic of Tanzania.
It is responsible for issuing the national currency, the Tanzanian shilling.
It was established under the Bank of Tanzania
Act 1965, however in 1995 the government
decided the central bank had too many responsibilities.
Therefore it was hindering its other objectives. In response,
the government introduced the Bank of Tanzania Act 1995,
which gave the bank a key single objective, which was
monetary policy.
