Capital of the Western Region, Kigoma is the main railway terminus on the shores of Lake Tanganyika.

Kigoma is a mildly interesting place, with a good dhow yard, an imperial German railway station and the famous but unimpressive Livingstone Memorial.

The nearby settlement of Ujiji, whose name sends shudders down the spines of students of East African history, is not so interesting either, but still pretty cool.

Kigoma Hill Hotel

The reason for coming here is to visit the chimpanzees, which means that the area attracts an international clientele of educated, environmentally sensitive people.

Kigoma Hill Hotel, with its conference centre, gym, watersports and tennis courts, seems to have missed that point completely. It does however remain the only practicable hotel in Kigoma and a base from which to go to Mahale and Gombe to see the chimps.
